Barry University

Barry University is a private, Catholic school that was founded outside of Miami. The school is fairly large and is considered one of the most populous of such universities located in the southeastern United States. With the school’s founding in 1964, the university became the first public university in southeast Florida and initially only offered upper-division courses and graduate-level study. In the 1980s, the school started offering classes appropriate for freshman and sophomore students, and it was at this time that the population of the school increased dramatically. In the past few years, the school has focused upon increasing its admissions standards and becoming a more traditional university with additional research funding and new facilities.
Educational Specialist (Ed.S), Marriage and Family Therapy Specialty Area
Students who enter this program should have one of two career goals, as defined by Florida Atlantic University. Students should either want to increase their skills in areas of leadership within the industry or they should want to obtain credentialing in an area like Marriage and Family Therapy, School Counseling, or Mental Health Counseling. Each student who enters the program will meet with an advisor to create a specialized program that should help the student meet his or her goals, and which will also be based upon the prior experience of the student. The degree requires that students complete at least 33 credits in a program approved by an advisor. With approval, students may be able to transfer some credits into the program including up to nine credits from another master’s degree program from FAU or six credits from a master’s program at another accredited university. To gain entry into the program, students must have maintained a 3.5 GPA, obtained three letters of recommendation, and have interviewed with the department faculty.

Established in 1964, Nova Southeastern University has a main campus in Fort Lauderdale, as well as satellite locations in cities like Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. Established in 1968, Palm Beach Atlantic University is an interdenominational, faith-based university focused upon a Christian worldview of education. The school is only one mile from the Atlantic Ocean and sits on the Intracoastal Waterway. The school was founded by a man named Jess C. Moody, who was a pastor of a local Baptist Church in West Palm Beach. Rollins College
Hamilton Holt School
Established in 1885, Rollins College is a private school located in Winter Park. The suburban campus is small, and the school has just over 3,100 students attending classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. With its early establishment, the school is the oldest post-secondary institution in Florida. Stetson University

A private university in DeLand, Stetson University was ranked as one of the best colleges in the south by “U.S. News & World Report.” Established in 1883, the school was also ranked at the sixth position in “Washington Monthly” magazine’s 2013 College Guide for universities offering graduate degrees. The school has just over 3,000 students attending and was originally named after a New York philanthropist named Henry Addison DeLand. The name was changed in the late 1880s to honor the famous hat manufacturer, John B. Stetson, after he gave the school a generous donation. The school was in danger of closing until Stetson stepped in with funds.

Stetson University at Celebration

The main campus of Stetson University is in DeLand, but in 2004, the university opened an additional campus in Kissimmee, Florida called the Stetson University Center at Celebration. The new location was designed to offer graduate-level study, as well as classes from the Boundless Learning program. A public research university with a main campus in Orlando, the University of Central Florida is part of the state’s university system and is the second-large university in the entire country according to enrollment numbers. Almost 60,000 students attend school at the University of Central Florida, and the school was established in 1963. The University of Miami is a private school in Coral Gables, and has around 16,000 students enrolled for classes. Throughout its history, the school has hosted students from all states in the country, as well as around 150 different foreign countries. Many students in the program eventually go on to earn doctorates in therapy and related fields. The school offers several schedules for students of different needs including 2-year, 3-year, and 4-year programs. Core courses required in the program include Lifespan Human Development and Theory and Practice with Children & Adolescents. Additionally, students in the Marriage and Family Specialty must complete additional classes like Dynamics of Marriage and Family Systems and Therapy for Couples. The program is designed so that students complete 15 courses after which a practicum year is required. Also, students must complete a comprehensive examination before exiting the program, as well as a self examination.

Therapy and counseling are essential parts of today’s mental health profession, and basic counseling services have expanded greatly in the past half-century to include specializations in marriage and couples therapy. The state of Florida has one of the largest populations in the country, and the state has a high need for mental health professionals.
